Granite
Granite
Granite is one of the world’s most durable and elegant natural stones, valued for its strength, timeless beauty, and versatility.
What Is Granite?
Granite is a felsic intrusive igneous rock with a granular and phaneritic texture, formed deep beneath the Earth’s surface.
The name granite originates from the Latin word granum, meaning “grain,” which perfectly describes its coarse-grained crystal structure.
Depending on its mineral content, granite may appear in white, pink, or grey hues.
- By composition, it typically contains:
- 20–60% quartz
- Up to 65% alkali feldspar
- The potassium feldspar gives many granites their signature pink tone, making every piece naturally unique.
Physical Properties
- Granite is known for its exceptional physical characteristics:
- Density: 2.65 – 2.75 g/cm³
- Compressive Strength: Above 200 MPa
- Viscosity (near STP): 3–6 × 10¹⁹ Pa·s
- Melting Point: 1215–1260 °C (2219–2300 °F)
- Texture: Granular and phaneritic
- Its hardness, toughness, and resistance to wear make it an ideal material for long-term structural and decorative applications.
Common Applications
- Granite is one of the most versatile stones available and is used extensively in:
- Kitchen countertops and worktops
- Flooring and wall cladding
- Steps, risers, and paving
- Building facades and pillars
- Fireplaces, monuments, and memorials
- Its durability and aesthetic appeal make it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
